Proposed 8 years Mission to Jupiter in 2022 (JUICE)
In 2022, a new spacecraft is expected to set off an eight-year journey to Jupiter, where it will explore the planet icy moons and provide fresh insight into the waterworlds orbiting the giant planets in our solar system and beyond.
The primary target of the mission, named Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), is the solar systems largest moon, Ganymede, an icy world slightly larger than the planet mercury. Ganymede may represent a whole class of potentially habitable environments in our galaxy.
Professor Michele Dougherty from Imperials Department of Physics led the proposal for the mission and funded by the European Space Agency. She is one of a 15-strong Science Study Team from institutions across Europe.
